The island of Rarotonga stands 14,750 feet ( 4500 metres ) above the ocean floor. It has a circumference of 32 kilometres and covers an area of 70 square kilometres.
The island is surrounded by a lagoon and protected by a reef system that runs right around the island in places 500metres off shore ( Muri Beach area ) and closer on the eastern and western sides.
The interior is dominated by eroded volcanic peaks covered in dense vegetation. There are no roads crossing the island however a pleasant cross island walk allows you to take in the spectacle of viewing both sides of the island at one time. The main road is a modern transport means while the inland road traverses three quarters of the way around and is narrower.
